PTNA Family membership started a year ago, and over 450 people have joined since then. What are the advantages of family membership? Some statistics of the PTNA piano competition and PTNA STEP show that the number of stage performance of participants whose parents are family members are twice as much as that of non-members.
Hiromi Wada (family member) has two kids, 10 and 12, who have participated in the competition and STEP several times before. As they continue learning music, they became aware that the membership discount would be beneficial, and decided to become a member. She came to realize that the advantage of the membership is much more than that. The PTNA quarterly journal "OUR MUSIC" brings a lot of information that open her eyes. She learns about music interpretations of the competition repertoires, comments and points by each adjudicators (final round), etc. Flyers also motivate children to go to live concerts and recitals.
Kanae Morita, a family member living in Aichi, also has two kids. She is pleased to see them playing piano with joy and excitement as they get involved in competitions and STEP. After becoming a member, she enjoys reading the quarterly journals and know better about the competition, etc. As PTNA Piano Competition has Japanese compositions in its repertoire, she read living composer's message and intention of those pieces, and helped children to understand them. After the competition, she discovered her children's names on the journal's special edition, and that brought them a sense of accomplishment.
Then, how do piano teachers think about the advantage of family membership? At the piano studio of Masayo Sato, almost all the students enroll in PTNA either as family members, GrandMuse members, or student members. Although she admits that the discount is the most beneficial item among the membership services, she understands the importance of information (PTNA website, journals, etc.) that expands ones' perspective and insight on music. "I want my students to know how the music world changes, not just come to the studio and play. Family support is essential for motivating children to practice and play on stage. Eventually, they love piano much more and are encouraged to improve piano playing."
