PTNA Piano Affiliated Competition Network, which began 8 years ago, welcomes 6 new competitions this year. The affiliated competitions are not only for piano, but also for strings, brass, woodwinds, voice, chamber music, etc.
Hasegawa Mitsuko, a PTNA member, appreciates this network service as it offers variety of choices and opportunities for students, and thus the daily lessons become more motivating. One of the advantages is that there are several competitions which require only one piece, whereas PTNA Piano Competition asks participants to prepare 4 pieces from baroque to modern. For instance, students easily take a challenge to the Burgmüller competition with a piece they are practicing. According to her, the Bach Competition can be used for students who have to study Baroque in depth, since the competition brings an incentive to do detailed analysis. Some people use competitions in preparation for another competition. One of her students once took part in the Neyagawa Arukas Piano Competition (Osaka), in order to prepare for the duo division of the PTNA Piano Competition. Participants could play on two Steinway pianos, and that was a great experience for students, says Hasegawa.
