PTNA expands the network of affiliated piano competitions across Japan. One of the recently joined competitions, The "Sonata" competition, is designed for participants from 10-20 years old who would like to study sonata form. Finalists will be able to play the full movements and take the masterclass from a jury member. Those who are living afar from Tokyo are able to be judged by performance videos.

Some competitions are more locally oriented. The Gifu Piano Competition is open for elementary school kid to adults, and one round only.  Participants can entry with two pieces, a work from required repertories and a work of free of choice. Award winners will be entited to join in the concert of Shohei Sekimoto, a pianist from this prefecture who won the 4th prize in the 2005 Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw and grand prize in 2003 PTNA Piano Competition.
The Neyagawa AruKas Piano Competition has been taken place in AruKas Hall, a new concert hall in Osaka that has 2 Steinway concert grand pianos. It is open for pre-school kids to adults, two rounds, and three divisions (solo, 4 hands, and 2 pianos).

There are competitions which has single purpose, and therefore, aims for intensive learning. The Burgmüller Competition only requires participants to play works by Burgmüller. Yukiko Watanabe, the representative, suggests that it is good opportunity for both students and teachers to study his works in depth, since those are frequently played in daily lessons and easy to try.
Likewise, The Japan Bach Music Concours requires only one piece from Bach. Naomi Ishii, the representativ encourages participants to learn polyphony, as well as to make a habit of independent study. Last year, she published selected works of Bach, without any articulations nor descriptions of dynamic, tempo, etc.
