The PTNA Piano Teachers' License Program consists of 4 exams to assess well-balanced teaching skills; teaching demonstration, stage performance, theoretical comprehension, and essay writing. PTNA proposes several seminars and workshops to prepare for the exams for each skill.
Regarding to the teaching skill, there are three ways of training. 1) Lesson observation program will help participants to learn from senior teachers, such as the program and procedure of daily lesson, the effective way to deliver messages to students, good communication skills with students and their parents, etc. 2) STEP one-point-advice-lessons, 10 min intensive lessons by STEP advisors, also provide lots of hints to teachers in order to think about efficient and effective way of teaching. 3) The Teachers' License trial sessions, which will be taken place in Fukuoka in August, will give opportunities for potential examinees to prepare for the actual exam.
Regarding to the essay writing, one of the judges (examiner) advises to write reports not only based on summaries of what has been taught in seminars, but also on ideas how to apply them to their daily lessons. He says that taking part in various seminars is a way to know various perspectives in understanding and teaching music, since all the students are individual and different.
Yoriko Kimura, who took the elementary level teaching license in 2015 and now preparing for the completion of all levels, has participated in the lesson observation program three times. She learned how senior teachers pointed out and gave effective, substantial advices right after listening to students' performances. Even if students could not respond correctively at that time, teachers gave them advices or assignments that would be a help in the future. She also knew the importance of demonstrative performance so as to make students understood swiftly and effectively about the musical structure as well as musical expressions. According to her, the Teachers' License Program relates to everything needed, from teaching skills, ability of performance, quantity and quality of musical knowledge and ideas, and that makes her think back her own lesson style as a whole.
