The special masterclass for the grade Jr.G will be held on June 25th -26th at the Showa Academia Musicae. This year, PTNA invites Prof.Gabriel Kwok from Hong Kong as the lecturer of the masterclass, and Prof. Shinichiro Kato as the lecturer of the musical analysis workshop. 14 young pianists will participate in this two-day-intensive project.
The grade Jr.G, designed for young promising pianists under 16, has been held every two years. It aims at discovering and nurturing young talents through three stages; the document screening in March, the group masterclass and the concert in June (no elimination) , and the final round in August. The past guest professors are Boris Petrushansky (2005), Tatiana Zelikman (2006), Kang Choong Mo (2008), Chong-Pil Lim (2010), William Grant Naboré (2012), Andrea Bonatta (2014). Prof.Bonatta later invited three young pianists to the Eppan Piano Academy for junior pianists, which he organizes in Italy.
In June, both the masterclass and the workshop will be conducted in a group work setting. Yoh Nishio (associate professor of Ueno Gakuen College of Music), the previous lecturer for the analysis workshop, asked participants to do improvisation, composition, musical analysis on Chopin's pieces, in order to let them consider how one note, one chord, one phrase means to the music and how sounds could be produced correspondingly. Eiko Nagano, the teacher of the previous gold prize winner (Akito Tani), was delighted to see young talents got to know and encourage each other in two days, not only through their performances, but also taking classes together and chatting about music and their daily lives.
