The special masterclass & concert "Learn piano concerto with piano accompaniment!" will be held in Tokyo on May 5th. The master class and concert will be led by Akira Wakabayashi, pianist (master class program; Mozart piano concerto K.466 No.20 & Chopin piano concerto Op.11 No.1).
Wakabayashi won the 2nd prize in the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition in 1988, and had orchestral experiences more than 400 times, including NHK Symphony Orchestra, Russian National Orchestra, Saint-Petersburg Philharmonic to name a few. He also played concerto under the baton of renowned conductors such as Alexander Lazarev, Gerd Albrecht, etc.
He recommends to learn concertos along with solo pieces, as music sometimes require the orchestral images even if there were written for solo. He himself was encouraged to understand them in depth by having orchestral ideas and perspectives, in terms of length of phrases, determination to keep long phrases, etc. One of his experiences in his early teens was playing Grieg concerto with a junior philharmonic orchestra, a collaborative project with PTNA. Later on, he played Rachmaninov concerto No.2 in the TV program hosted by a conductor Naozumi Yamamoto, in which he was impressed by three-dimensional sound effects of orchestra. His first concerto experience abroad was the final round of Busoni International Competition at the age of 20.
Through his professional career, he realized that one of the most important thing is to have deep breath, and to feel the entire atmosphere of the music, and share its image, structure, direction with orchestras, not just try to adjust the timing.
In the masterclass on May 5th, 2 pianists will be appeared as 2nd piano assistants; Yuhi Ozaki and Keina Sato. They are former PTNA Grand prize winners and studied in Hannover University for Music and Drama for several years.
Prior to this event, the prize winners' concert of concerto division will be held. 3 winners will play Prokofiev No.2, Rachmaninov No.2, and Schumann concerto.
