60% of the piano teachers (among PTNA members) organize Studio Concert once a year, according to the recent statistics. One of them, Mari Kumagai, the author of a book titled "50 Tips to Make your Studio Concert Successful" (Yamaha Music Media), the most important thing is the accomplishment of solo performances to show how much the students have developed from the previous year. She also lets them play ensembles, with which they can develop communication skills. Parents also praise other children, that generates pleasant atmosphere and a sense of unity between them.

67% of those who hold Studio Concert on a regular basis, also use PTNA Piano STEP (concert-setting evaluation). Ms.Kumagai distinguishes those two big events, by selecting only classical pieces for the annual studio concert, and allowing any favorite pieces in STEP. This is because studio concert is the best opportunity to demonstrate their personal and musical development to their parents.

According to her, the studio concert is the best chance to promote the studio itself. Every year, there are some people who would like to join the studio, after coming and listening to the concert. It is so much easier to start communication in this way, Ms.Kumagai says, as they understand the studio's teaching policy.

Mieko Itoh, whose son recently entered into Kumagai's piano studio, is also teaching piano from 2 years ago. She observed a number of studio concerts of other teachers, and was especially impressed by Kumagai's, as every student has individual sounds and a sense of singing. In addition, the whole class seemed to be welcoming and comfortable. She was further convinced once she brought her son to the studio. He is now enjoying the lessons, and experienced several stages at the studio concert, STEP and PTNA piano competition.
