"The Recital Series for Teenage Talented Pianists" is back! On May 5th, the 18th special session will be held in Tokyo with a young pianist Tomoki Sakata, the PTNA Grand Prize winner in 2011 and the youngest finalist of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2013.
This series was inaugurated in 1990, in which young pianists of promising talent have made recital debut; Kyoko Tabe, Midori Nohara, Yuma Osaki, Rieko Nezu, Shohei Sekimoto, Hibiki Tamura, Yuhi Ozaki, etc. to name a few (>see the list & programs). The series has been suspended for 5 years, after Aimi Kobayashi gave recital in 2010 spring.

This year, the 21-year-old pianist is chosen as a soloist of this special session, owing to his outstanding talent and achievements in his teens. According to him, Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit came to his mind immediately when he considered the concept of the program, which he thought would perfectly fit for the beautiful acoustic effect of Hamarikyu-Aasahi Hall. Then he combined it with works of French composers like Tristan Murail and Faure, together with works of Liszt and Chopin who were influenced by French culture.

Sakata has already been invited to renowned international festivals, concerts, and masterclass including Lake Como International Piano Academy (Italy), Liszt Junior Piano Academy (Netherlands), etc. One of his great musical memories was the all-Liszt recital in Kremlin Music Festival in Moscow in 2010. Late Prof.Nikolai Petrov, who invited him to the festival, praised for his fine performance as "the best Liszt in the world". He is currently studying in Hanover, Germany.
