PTNA conducts writing examination as one of the teachers' self-education programs. This is to examine how teachers comprehend musical knowledge and how they put them into practice. Thus the examination consists of practical questions; for instance, listen to the excerpts of a piece and point out the mistakes on the given score, analyze a score and explain how you convey it to students, read a prospected situation in teaching and write how you respond as a teacher, etc. Two weeks later, all examinees receive result reports and suggested answers. The spring examination is particularly focused on repertoires of PTNA Piano Competition.

One of the examinees, Yaeko Sasai, is grateful to have the opportunity to review what she already knows and does, and also to learn what she has not studied. Especially, questionnaires about musical analysis encourage her to learn how to analyze and how to approach to the music. Hiroe Kubo even began to learn analysis with a college professor, after she took writing examination.

Kikue Sawada regularly organizes study session in Hiroshima prior to the writing examinations. This spring, she focused on the required repertoires of the competition (grade A2-D). She testifies that the examination highlights the important elements in each piece which helps teachers to learn without missing them.
