Summer might be the most exciting season for those who take part in the PTNA Piano Competition, and for their teachers. How do they prepare for the stage? PTNA recommends taking some special intensive seminars / lectures before the competition starts.
One of the piano teachers, Yumi Ogata took several lectures in the past years and got fresh perspectives there. Each lecturer has different approach to music, technique, understanding to music structures, analysis, etc. and she was greatly inspired by their words and sounds.
One of the lecturers, Yukiko Watanabe (photo), always tries to point out the characteristics of each piece. Her lessons usually bring pleasant surprise to participants, as they realized great changes in their performances afterward.
Rui Urayama, the Grand Prize Winner in 2013, remembered that she took part in some masterclasses in her early teens, and sometimes confused to hear different opinions by different teachers on a same piece. Later she compared them, tried them out by herself, and chose whichever she preferred. She became aware that different perspectives and interpretations in music are expected as a matter of course, and thus it is important to think by oneself.
