A Variety of Chopin Projects in 2010
In 2010, the bicentennial anniversary of Chopin, PTNA plans a variety of projects for piano teachers to explore the music of this great composer in the 19th century.
Two major projects which PTNA organizes will be the observation tour of Chopin International Piano Competition in Warsaw (October) and the special lecture concert of Chopin (May).
Chopin International Piano Competition is one of the most popular competitions among Japanese people, and observation tours have been taken place every 5 years. A number of teachers are expected to join this year again. The tour will offer two options; from the 1st to the 3rd rounds, or 2nd and 3rd rounds. The deadline will be April 16th.
The special lecture concert of Chopin will be held in May in Tokyo, featuring Mazurka, Polonaise and Waltz. Prof.Hitoshi KOBAYASHI, a pianist and professor emeritus of Tokyo University of fine arts and music, will give special lecture on those pieces, and several young pianists will give demonstrative performances. Prof.Kobayashi mentions that it would be an opportunity for piano teachers and students in Japan to know the important elements of 'dance' as the backbone in his music. The ballet 'Les Sylphides' will also be demonstrated (accompanied by piano) in the end of this lecture concert.
On the other hands, some collaborative projects have launched already. In cooperation with EMI Music Japan, a commentary booklet (20p) is published particularly for PTNA members and appended to CD of Chopin. All the texts are cited from the comments on PTNA Piano Encyclopedia.
PTNA also collaborates with the monthly magazine 'Chopin', to propose the way of enjoying Chopin music easier and jazz-y. Every month, two versions of arrangements of a Chopin piece are introduced on the magazine, and anyone can see the demonstration video online.
Another collaboration with publishing company is the publication of online essay. Prof.Minoru NISHIHARA, one of the famous researchers of Chopin, has been writing essays titled 'Piano in the 19th Century' on PTNA website, and will be published soon from ARTES Publishing. This publishing company is specialised in music and musicians.
In May, La Folle Journée au Japon will be held in the center of Tokyo, and PTNA young pianists will also play at the small concerts in the neighborhood, Marunouchi area. This 'Aria Event' is free of charge.
In addition, a weekly 'manga' illustrating the life history of Chopin has gained stable popularity since 2003! Already counted 160 times, the finale is drawing near. If you are interested, please see it from the beginning!
