Statistics would be a good reference for teachers to take better measures in their teaching.

PTNA Piano STEP allows participants to play pieces from variety of required repertoires, yet a certain tendency can be observed in their way of selection.

Burgmüller pieces gained a largest popularity among all the repertoires in 2008, followed by pieces from Gillock, Sonatine Album, Bastien and J.S.Bach.

Regarding to the books for piano method, again Burgmüller became at the top of the ranking, and Bastien took the second place. Beyer, Thompsons, Bach (Invention), followed.

Then, how is the ranking of the selection of popular music?  "Aradine"(1st), "Beauty and Beast"(2nd), "When you wish upon a star"(4th) from Disney films were chosen most, and music from Miyazaki films came the next, such as "Totoro"(5th) .

Japanese compositions are also incorporated in the required repertories. Here is the composers who appeared in top 10 ranking; Takekuni HIRAYOSHI, Karen TANAKA, Chisato HOSAKA, Akira YUYAMA, Chihiro YAMASHITA, Tetsumaro HONDA, Jo HISAISHI, Yumi KIMURA, and Akira MIYOSHI.

Among the 2009 STEP required repertoire, music of HIRAYOSHI was also frequently viewed on Youtube (2156 views / 4 months), being just behind the sonatine of Mozart.

Mass does not necessarily define the value of the piece, but it could gather better pedagogical ideas and knowledge. We will see how the tendency changes or sustains, in the end of this academic year.
